Innovation in urban design and inspiring development of public spaces can have a positive impact on society by fostering communities that are healthy, vibrant, connected, open, and engaging. Below is information about the community planning event for the Riverfront Crossings plan.

The City of Iowa City will host a community planning event from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28 to gather public input on proposals to improve the Iowa riverfront and transform the former North Wastewater Treatment Plant area into a new riverfront park. The meeting will be held at the Park Lodge at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, 579 McCollister Boulevard. All interested community members are encouraged to attend.
Over the last several years the City has been gathering ideas from Iowa City residents about what should be included in the new riverfront park, which will become a focal point for a new, walkable urban neighborhood in the Riverfront Crossings District and a flood-resilient open space for the entire region. Several prominent themes have emerged:
- Promoting better environmental stewardship of our urban waters;
- Improving public access to the Iowa River;
- Providing new opportunities for active recreation; and
- Celebrating Iowa City as a center for art and culture.
Planning consultants will give a presentation highlighting proposals for floodplain, stream and riverbank restoration; wetland creation; hazard mitigation solutions near the Burlington Street dam; riverfront trails and design concepts for the new park. An open house/public input session will follow the presentation.
This effort has been funded in part by grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Iowa Great Places and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
