Mary Cohen, School of Music, Music Education (University of Iowa)

Mary Cohen, Associate Professor of Music Education, is involved in two university-community partnership programs related to her teaching and research: the Voices of Experience, where she mentors a music education student who directs the mixed chorus of adults age 50 and older, and the Oakdale Community Choir, comprised of men incarcerated (inside singers) at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center and women and men from outside the prison (outside singers).

She completed her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate of philosophy in music education at the University of Kansas and has ten years experience teaching general music and leading choirs in Lawrence and Kansas City areas.

Her work as a researcher and creative scholar has always been focused on women’s issues, community, art, and people who are incarcerated.

She earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing from East Carolina University and an MFA (Studio Art) and a Ph.D. (Art Education) from Florida State University. [More…]
