County has outgrown jail, courthouse

[Source: “County has outgrown jail, courthouse,” Press Citizen, 17 April 2013, by Paula Sears]

Johnson County has outgrown its current courthouse, jail and sheriff’s office.

Our current facility creates an unsafe environment for our jurors, the employees and anyone who has reason to visit. Our courthouse is 112-years-old and has outgrown its capacity to serve the current population. It is lacking in space, storage, accessibility of case files and hampers access to improved technology.

The jail, which was built in 1981, is so short on space that the Johnson County taxpayers are spending $1 million per year to house our prisoners elsewhere. It is time to invest in a facility that meets the needs of our growing population and keeps our tax dollars in Johnson County.

On May 7, I’ll vote “yes” for the justice center.
