National Night Out is 4:30 – 7PM on Tuesday August 5, 2014

On Tuesday, August 5, neighborhoods throughout Iowa City are invited to join thousands of other communities nationwide for the 31st Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.

Over 38 million people in almost 15,000 communities from all 50 states are expected to participate in the event to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and involvement in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen police-community partnerships, build neighborhood spirit, and send the message that neighborhoods are fighting back against crime.

Many neighborhoods in Iowa City will be hosting special events such as block parties, cookouts, anti-crime rallies, visits from the police, flashlight walks, contests, and youth activities on National Night Out. From 4:30 to 7 p.m., residents throughout Iowa City are encouraged to turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outdoors visiting with neighbors and police officers. (Remember to lock your doors before you leave as a crime prevention measure!)

Iowa City Police Officers will attend all registered block parties to meet residents and distribute safety information. Officers will also be handing out special gifts to children. To register your event, contact Officer R.A. Mebus at crime-prevention@iowa-city.org or call the Crime Prevention Office at 319-356-5273.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Iowa City Police Department with support from the Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers, Target, and Hy-Vee.
